Visual Critique -Temple safety - DAN REILEY

There are all types of situations that college kids face everyday whether it is homework, exams, or just classes in general. Another stress that is specifically living inside Temple students is their safety when walking the streets that surround Temple. This visual was made by me; and it was two Google images put together with a message that is conveyed to the parents of Temple students. If the parents are informed they will want to have their kids living in safe places. With the parents more involved, it could put pressure on the campus to both expand their security and even persuade the university to add on-campus housing for students.
When looking at the visual you see the crime scene background that represents the rough streets in which students live at because of lacking and expensive housing on campus. The Temple owl is seen in the visual as well to represent how close to the campus crimes occur. At last the copy grabs the reader’s attention with a frightening headline and leads you to the right side of the ad in which the copy stands alone. As long as the headline leads the reader to the copy, the ad has done its job. Even if it’s not a Temple parent reading it, the message will get across to someone.

BILL COSBY- STOP THE VIOLENCE IN NORTH PHILLY

Finding a video that went along with my issue was not easy until I came across one featuring North Philadelphia born Bill Cosby. Although this video is about a half a minute, it gets the point across that he is there for peace and to stop the violence in North Philadelphia. The ending of the violence isn’t just important to Temple and its student, but the entire community. This video is another perspective of the effort to stop the violence in this area in which Temple happens to be a part of. It is obvious that if celebrities like Bill Cosby can be a part of cleaning up this city, than parents and students should have a part in it as well. It is very uplifting to know that most of everyone would love to end the violence. It’s just too bad that there are still bad people out there who live by that. My neighbors in North Philadelphia that have been a part of this community for their whole lives share the same view point as me, but have a realistic view to it as well. I talk to my neighbor Omar every once and a while if he’s out side and he once said to me that, “no matter what, there’s gonna be people around here that just don’t care.” This is why the University needs to be the most involved to keep their students safe.
In conclusion, The University needs to be responsible for the students’ safety because they live in these areas specifically to be close to campus. The students are aware of the dangers of off-campus living but, their other choice is to live at home and commute everyday. The university should realize this and, at the very least, ensure the safety of these students by expanding the campus security by four blocks. Increasing security would ease the minds of students who fear the worst everyday while walking back from class. In an article about recently slain police officer Patrick McDonald, two blocks off Temple’s campus, a resident of the area had a couple things to say about the safety of the streets, "It's rough out here…It's just going to get worse before it gets better.” With situations like this happening right on the streets that house Temple students, the university failed to alert the students once again, a sign that the University won’t care until something horrible like this happens on campus.
