Visual Critique- Universal Healthcare

When I started looking for ads concerning universal healthcare, it was really hard to find them that actually supported it. For the print ad, I made it myself quickly by getting a picture off Google and adding the text at the bottom. It was quick, but gets the point across.
First, in order for ads to be appealing, they obviously need to be attention getting. If an ad cannot grab the customer’s attention, the page will just be turned or the channel changed and the ad will be unseen. For ads concerning healthcare, I think they should be relatable and informative. This print ad could definitely be more attention getting, but I think that it draws the attention of the viewer in an emotional way. Seeing a sick person in bed is upsetting to most people. Seeing this person makes people feel bad, but also like seeing a car crash: it’s painful to look at, but you can’t help to want to know what is going on. Although it does portray that health insurance companies are focused on making money instead of actually helping their customers, the ad does not give any form of action. It would be better if it was sponsored by a company and it had the company logo at the bottom. Maybe it could have more information about how to contact the organization that sponsored it.
As for the visual ad, I found it on YouTube. It isn’t for complete universal healthcare, but it is for providing Americans with a kind of national healthcare system as well as still providing the option for families to stay with their individual provider if they wish. I think this is a great ad. It draws the attention of the viewer because it starts with a mother and child shaking a Magic 8 Ball. First, I think the Magic 8 Ball grabs the attention because they are not very common to see today. I personally forgot about the toy until this commercial. The commercial continues and it shows different people shaking this 8 Ball asking it different kinds of medical insurance questions. It portrays the toy as the insurance company and how the insurance companies are as unreliable as this children’s toy. The commercial is short, simple, and easy to understand. Also, I think it is good because it shows normal, everyday people asking relatable questions; nothing too complicated. It shows people with normal situations. Maybe it can make viewers think in advance, instead of waiting until they are having a baby or getting a surgery, to think about what their insurance provider will cover and what they won’t. It is very straightforward and there are no hidden messages. At the end of the commercial, a narrator comes on and explains that health insurance providers are more focused on making money than making customers healthy. It shows the audience who is sponsoring the commercial and tells the audience exactly what they need to do. Seeing the commercial didn’t completely change my life, but I think it will get people thinking about their insurance companies and what they will actually cover before it’s too late.
For ads to be successful, I think the most important thing is for them to grab viewers’ attention. If people aren’t looking at it, then it doesn’t matter how powerful or important the message is. Also, the ad needs to be show the sponsor or company. Last, I think ads just need to be straightforward in what they want you to do.
